EV servicing and diagnostics
Both of us hold the IMI Level 4 electric and hybrid qualification, which covers removing and repairing the drive battery and every high-voltage component around it. That is the part of an electric car a general garage cannot safely approach, and it is the reason most EV owners end up back at a main dealer for work that has nothing to do with the battery.
Does an electric car still need servicing?
Yes, and more of it than owners are often told. There is no oil change and no cam belt, but an electric BMW or MINI still has brakes, brake fluid, coolant, cabin filters, suspension, tyres and 12 volt electrics, all of which wear and all of which are inspected on a schedule.
Brakes are the counterintuitive one. Regenerative braking does most of the slowing, so the friction brakes do far less work than on a petrol car. That sounds like good news, and for pad wear it is, but discs that are rarely used corrode rather than wear. The result is that EV brakes often need attention for the opposite reason to a normal car, and skipping inspections because the pads are barely worn is how it gets missed.
What is high-voltage work and why can most garages not do it?
An electric car carries a drive battery, an inverter, an on-board charger and the cabling between them, operating at voltages that will kill someone who treats them like a 12 volt system. Working on that side of the car requires specific training, the correct equipment, and a controlled process for isolating the system before anything is touched.
Both of us hold the IMI Level 4 electric and hybrid qualification, which is the level that covers removing and repairing the drive battery itself and every high-voltage component around it, rather than simply isolating the system and working around it. A garage without that is not being cautious by declining the work; it is being correct.
Can you diagnose a charging or battery fault?
Yes. Charging faults in particular are a common reason an EV ends up at a dealer, and they are frequently not the battery at all: they can sit in the on-board charger, the cabling, the control units or the handshake between the car and the charge point.
Because we run genuine BMW ISTA, we read a BMW i or MINI Electric on the manufacturer's own system, with its fault history and live data, rather than inferring from a generic tool that was never designed for the high-voltage side of the car.
Which cars does this cover?
BMW i and MINI Electric models, and the plug-in hybrids, which carry the same high-voltage considerations alongside a combustion engine. If you are not sure which category your car falls into, tell us the registration and we will tell you.
Why does this matter in South Wales specifically?
Because the number of electric cars on the road has grown faster than the number of independent garages equipped to look after them, which leaves owners with a main dealer as the only option for routine work. Being high-voltage trained is what removes that constraint, and it is not something most independents locally are currently offering.
